Dog Hiking Safety 101: Keep Your Pup Cool, Safe & Happy on Summer Trails

Adventure is better with your dog — but warm-weather hikes come with extra safety steps.

Whether you're heading to the mountains or your favourite local trail, summer hiking can be an incredible bonding experience. But dogs are just as vulnerable to heat, dehydration, and paw injuries as we are — sometimes more so.

Here’s how to keep your dog safe and happy on the trail:

1. Gear up with the right harness

Choose a breathable, no-pull harness that allows full range of motion without rubbing. The Tail Blazers Adjustable Dog Harness is lightweight and secure — perfect for active dogs on the go.

2. Keep them hydrated

Dogs can’t sweat like humans, so they overheat quickly. Bring a collapsible water bowl and offer frequent water breaks. Look for shady spots to rest.

3. Protect their paws

Hot terrain can burn paw pads. Use paw balm or protective booties if the ground is hot to the touch. (Tip: If you can’t walk barefoot on it, your dog shouldn’t either.)

4. Watch for signs of heat stress

Excessive panting, drooling, or slowing down? Time to stop and cool off. Know the signs of heatstroke — read this quick guide from the AKC.

Your dog loves the outdoors as much as you do — let’s make every adventure a safe one.
